The Wall and Hanging Valley Glades

by Nitro

The Lines in Hanging Valley are too numerous to mention. The local traverses and secrets could take seasons to discover. Here are a few hints and tips to get you started. To access the Hanging Valley, head up the High Alpine Lift. At the top, begin hiking through the gate. My local's tip is to take any line down the Hanging Valley Head, wall and into the Frog Pond Glades. Work your way to the right, and you will be presented with another wide open bowl we call the Strawberry Patch. This is EPIC! Enjoy and head down to Alpine Springs to begin another lap.

Another route that is a little harder to find is the Hanging Valley Glades. From the top of the High Alpine Lift, head down The Edge and be on the lookout for the Hanging Valley Glades gate on skiers right. Enter and take the traverse due right. There you will be presented with a nice steep tree section or a nice 10 footer to jump off of. After you ski this steep you will get funneled into an opening. Look for another traverse skiers right and take that as far as possible. You will love the results. Take one of 4 paths to the lower catwalk, and head skiers left back to Elk Camp.

It is important to respect and follow all closure signs and ski patrol instructions when venturing into all areas of Snowmass Mountain. Remember to wear a helmet, body armor is recommended, and never ski alone.

Gear: When I venture into these areas my gear consists of High Society Freeride Skis mounted with the Marker Duke Bindings. I wear loose fitting, and not too baggy of clothes, a 661 body pressure suit with spine protection along with 661 padded shorts and a 661 helmet.
